JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT – THE UNKNOWN NOTEBOOKS

jeanmichelbasquiatLastnight I accompanied a very good friend of mine to a private exhibit of “The Unknown Notebooks” by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Jean-Michel was an artist, musician and producer of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. This man was a genius to say the least. I was so inspired by the consistency in his work; leaving the backs of pages blank and writing all in CAPS. What spoke to me the most was his use of “crossed out words”. In a sea of terms in the same category, Basquiat would include one word that didn’t belong. What you caught yourself doing, was focusing solely on what was crossed out. I found it so interesting how all I could ask myself was, “What was the meaning of this crossed out word?” It was deliberate, intentional and powerful.
